Highlighting the Greener Shift in Transportation Energy and Fuels Based on Novel Catalytic Materials

Abstract: Sustainable energy and fuels for personal vehicles is one of the most important topics nowadays. With the spirit being to minimize climate change, decarbonization strategy has been applied to transportation fuels, power generation, and personal vehicles. In the past, there was an incentive to shift from gasoline to biomass-derived liquid fuels such as ethanol. With an oversupply of shale gas and the availability of biogas, carbon pollution was further reduced to compressed natural gas and hydrogen fuel. Recent… Show more

“…However, despite all of this, the noble-metal-based catalysts are much costlier than metal-based catalysts, i.e., CZA, and do not fit commercial bulk-scale methanol production. The CZA catalyst is rather considered the most economical catalyst for industrial synthesis. ZSM-5 zeolite and H-ZSM-5 have been used for vapor-phase methanol conversion to DME …”

“…All steps, excluding the gasification process, are primarily dependent upon the type of catalyst, as already described in a previous section. A copper–zinc catalyst with a thermally stable support of alumina developed by ICI has been widely adapted commercially for the production of methanol and DME using syngas , and/or using a novel catalyst, i.e., H-ZSM and others . Catalysts have the tendency to be poisoned as a result of extreme sensitivity to copper.…”

“…In this regard, great attention is paid to hydrogen energy, which on the one hand will be used as energy storage [7,8], and in the production of hydrogen, for example, by biomass conversion can be considered as a renewable energy source [9,10]. In this regard, the adoption of strategies for the development of hydrogen energy by the world's leading powers is seen as an important step towards reducing the consumption of fossil carbonaceous raw materials (so-called decarbonization of the world economy) [11][12][13][14][15].…”
