Higher temperature order–disorder transition, electrical and optical properties of [N(C2H5)4]2Pd2Cl6compound

Abstract: [N(C2H5)4]2Pd2Cl6 hybrid compound with semiconducting character was synthetized and characterized by X‐ray diffraction, the thermal, optical and electrical properties. X‐ray diffraction indicates that the compound crystallize at room temperature in the orthorhombic system and (Immm) space group. Two endothermic peaks at, 343 K and 440 K were observed in the DSC measurements corresponding to the evaporation of water molecules and order‐disorder transition, respectively. The optical band gap (Eg = 4.34 eV) was d… Show more

“…For the inorganic moieties, the Pd 2+ ions are coordinated by four bridged Cl − atoms forming slightly distorted [PdCl 4 ] 2− square-planar shape and are further connected by two terminal Cl ligands to another Pd 2+ cation, forming a symmetric di-chloro-bridged dimer. The related compound [N(C 2 H 5 ) 4 ]2Pd 2 Cl 6 previously reported by I. Dakhlaoui et al 28 exhibits the same geometry. The distances between two adjacent Pd sites within the dimeric [Pd 2 Cl 6 ] 2− anions are 3.378(2) Å and 3.426(2) Å, comparable to those of other reported hybrid palladium( ii ) chloride compounds.…”

“…3b) indicates that the E g value obtained by a linear fit is equal to 2.2 eV. 41,42 This value shows the semiconductor character of the [(CH 3 ) 3 N(CH 2 ) 3 Br] 2 [Pd 2 Cl 6 ] compound and shows a smaller gap energy than other similar compounds such as [N(CH 3 ) 2 H 2 ] 2 [CoCl 4 ], 43 [(CH 3 ) 3 N(CH 2 ) 2 Br] 2 [ZnCl 4 ], 44 and [N(C 2 H 5 ) 2 ] 2 [Pd 2 Cl 6 ], 28 which are equal to 4.29 eV, 4.87 eV and 4.34 eV, respectively.…”

“…Szklarz et al had noticed that when the value of the entropy is higher than 2 J mol −1 K −1 it is usually considered as an indication of the order–disorder type of a phase transition, if lower to this value the transition is of displacive type. [ 13 ] We can conclude that the transitions occurring at T 1 and T 2 are of displacive type.…”
