Higher order prediction for geometry compression

Abstract: A lot of techniques have been developed for the encoding of triangular meshes as this is a widely used representation for the description of surface models. Although methods for the encoding of the neighbor information, the connectivity, are near optimal, there is still room for better encodings of vertex locations, the geometry. Our geometry encoding strategy follows the predictive coding paradigm, which is based on a region growing encoding order. Only the delta vectors between original and predicted locatio… Show more

“…The proposed scheme improves coding performance significantly at lower coding rate among the schemes with perfect reconstruction property. Also, in order to evaluate the coding performance of the proposed scheme at a higher coding rate, it was compared with the scheme of Gumhold et al [10] (we call it GA coder) which improved the prediction of TG coder. Table 1 shows PSNR of the proposed scheme and GA coder at the same coding rate with the coding performance of TG coder for 3-D meshes "Feline", "Horse", and "Dino".…”

“…To evaluate the proposed scheme some experiments using several 3D meshes with different connectivity complexity were performed. The coding performances of the proposed scheme are compared to the scheme adopted in MPEG-4, a TG coder which has been used as a benchmark of perfect reconstruction schemes, and the scheme by Gumhold et al [10] which used a higher-order prediction.…”

“…It predicts the new vertex by forming a parallelogram from the already decoded adjacent triangle, to estimate the vertex position across the edge. A number of extended versions of this method exist, using two or more parallelograms, called dual parallelogramm prediction [SKL03], prediction trees [KG00] or multiple parallelogram‐predictions combined with higher order surfaces [GA03].…”

“…The geometry predictor of Gumhold and Amjoun [2003] performs as many parallelogram predictions as possible to determine the tangential components of the prediction. However, to estimate the normal component, encoded by a dihedral angle, the encoder fits a high-order surface to the already-encoded part of the geometry.…”
