Higher mortality of severe influenza patients with probable aspergillosis than those with and without other coinfections

Abstract: Dual Aspergillus and influenza infection is emerging in southern Taiwan. Meanwhile, community-acquired P. aeruginosa should be listed in the common copathogens with severe influenza. The 67% mortality linked to aspergillosis highlights the need for physicians to focus attention on patients with GM ≥ 0.6.

“…There were four larger case series which included immunocompetent patients with Influenza and IPA; however, these were not listed above as granular data were not available for individual patients (Ku et al, 2017; Martín-Loeches et al, 2011; van de Veerdonk et al, 2017; Wauters et al, 2012). …”

“…9 The Taiwanese study did not reveal any high-risk patients. 10 The proportion of patients receiving antifungal therapy was significantly lower in the Taiwanese cohort (67% vs 91% and 92%, P = 0.007). The median time to initiation of antifungal therapy from the day of influenza diagnosis was shorter in survivors than in non-survivors (2 days vs 9 days, P = 0.06) in the Dutch cohort, but was similar in the Taiwanese (9 days vs 8 days) and Belgium (4 days vs 5 days) cohorts.…”

“…In Taiwan, a retrospective study enrolled adult patients with severe influenza in a tertiary center over a 15-month period. 10 IAA was identified in 21 (17%) of 124 influenza cases with a similar mortality of 67% (14/21). In this letter, we compare the clinical aspects and risk factors for mortality of the three cohorts with IAA.…”
