Higher education institutions (HEIs) in Albania and Kosovo have invested considerable efforts to tackle present regional sustainability challenges on a research-based and strategic level. This happened through their traditional role as a provider of research and education. Additional activities fostering HEIs as a driver for sustainable regional development and innovation have been initiated as part of their third mission. However, customized education approaches were missing in order to fulfill specific regional demands of different research and learning projects in collaboration with regional actors. This paper explores the recently finished project “Connecting Science-Society Collaboration for Sustainability Innovation—ConSus” which focuses on the efforts of HEIs in Albania and Kosovo to tackle present regional sustainability challenges in both countries. An analytical framework regarding collaborative learning opportunities towards sustainable regional development and innovation has been drafted based on five key elements (capacities of HEIs in regional development, planning, learning and implementation theory, and action research). This framework has been applied to analyze the learning activities of the ConSus project. As a main finding, customized education approaches in the contexts of sustainable development (SD) and collaboration of scientific and regional actors are important elements to cope comprehensively with real-world problems.

Entrepreneurship is a process characterized by the pursuit of opportunity. It is a series of steps that combines knowledge and skills to enable the process of value creation in fulfilling a market need. The role of education is increasing in successful entrepreneurial activities worldwide. Our work intends to contribute in highlighting and strengthening relations between university education and entrepreneurship in Albanian context. Following the European Directive "Rethinking Education Strategy" several Albanian universities are considering new methods for encouraging university ventures. One of the means suggested is through digital platforms established by and in universities that can play a significant role to push Albanian university education towards the closest collaboration with entrepreneurship and market. After the 'business incubators' wave, digital platforms are becoming the main stimulating tool of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit for young people, successfully used by many foreign universities. This study presents a new platform called Launchpad Albania, purposely designed to stimulate the development of new business ideas and to evaluate their success probability. Mainly intended for use by university students, it helps to find associates that support the business ideas and assist with business plan drawing. The expectations from this study are to facilitate establishment of digital platforms where universities, private businesses, banks, students, and lecturers are involved for entrepreneurial activities. This is the main theoretical and practical contribution to the benefit of Albanian universities in their efforts to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit, both at the individual and institutional level.

The education system in Albania, after 1990, has undergone some reforms both in the pre-university and university systems, reforms that were necessary due to the important socio-economic and cultural changes during the transition from the dictatorship to the democratic system. These reforms have affected and changed the role and position of Geography subject in the pre-University as well in the University curricula. These changes have been evident in the changing of numbers of weekly hours, content, perspectives of future development and in some specific topics. This paper aims to analyze the quantity and quality of these changes and to identify their direct impact in the geographic knowledge of the new generation of pupils and students of geography. Frequent changes have also occurred in the recruitment scheme of students at the university, bringing uncertainty and fluctuation of different levels from one year to the next. The involvement and implementation of Bologna system in the Albanian Universities brought many changes in the education curricula, teaching methodology, collaboration with foreign universities, diplomas, etc. From this point of view, considering the main issues faced by our University education system such as: the large number of students in the auditorium; the lack of laboratories; modern libraries; etc., it is important to analyze the importance and the role of the University in the professional formation of new teachers of Geography.
