Higher Content of C18:1 Trans Fatty Acids in Early Human Milk Fat of Roma Breast-Feeding Women

Abstract: Aim: The purpose of our study was to determine the content of trans fatty acids in early human breast milk as an indicator of dietary exposure in a sample of Roma breast-feeding women and in a sample of women from the general Czech population. Methods: We collected samples of early human milk from 43 Prague women from the general population and 21 Roma women. After lipid extraction, the fatty acids were converted into methyl esters (FAMEs). Finally, gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) an… Show more

“…This value is in good agreement with reports on mean percentage contributions of trans FAs to the FA composition of human milk in Europe [3,10,19,20,33,[39][40][41]. The mean values of trans FAs in mature milk reported for Poland (2.7%), Italy (Rome) (2.7%), Czech Republic (2.1%), France (2%) and Germany (2.4%) were all close to the value seen in our study.…”

“…For example, in a Czech study, Roma women had significantly higher mean C18:1 t levels in their HM than the average Czech population (2.73 ± 1.88 vs. 2.09 ± 1.24; w/w%, mean ± SD). The difference was explained by the higher consumption of foods with higher TFA content among Roma women, including buns, biscuits, butter, hamburgers, potato chips, and other fried food ( 96 ). This was also corroborated in an Asian study, where Chinese women on a Western-style diet had significantly higher TFA levels in their HM compared to lactating women on a traditional Chinese diet ( 92 , 100 ).…”
