High‐viscosity polyalkylphenanthrene oils: Synthesis and evaluation of lubricating properties

Abstract: Producing lubricating base oils from coal-based chemicals is an alternative route for replacing the conventional petro-based lubricants. Herein, we firstly reported the synthesis of high-viscosity polyalkylphenanthrene oils derived from the coal-based chemicals (phenanthrene, C6/C8-olefins) by alkylation with acidic ionic liquid (Et 3 NHClÁ2AlCl 3 ) as catalyst. Their primary physicochemical properties were studied in detail to reveal their structure-property relationships, the existence of the phenanthrene ri… Show more

“…The vapor-air mixture's FP is the lowest temperature at which it ignites when it comes into contact with the ame. For a lubricant, the higher ash point signi es the e cient security and the structural stability under the harsh working condition and the prolonged service life [20]. In Table 3, the FPs of all the samples were detected in the range of 180-199°C.…”

“…The synthesis of Et 3 NHCl−AlCl 3 (X AlCl3 =0.67) ionic liquid was carried out in a three‐necked, round‐bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a reflux condenser, from which air has been displaced by the passage of argon for 30 min. First, 6 mmol of Et 3 NHCl, 10 mmol of n ‐decane and 12 mmol of AlCl 3 were successively introduced into the flask [7b,10b,33] . Then the mixture was stirred at 60 °C for 30 min until a homogeneous Et 3 NHCl−AlCl 3 ionic liquid was obtained.…”

“…They have stable physicochemical properties that are conducive to storage and transportation. ILs exhibit unique properties such as mild reaction conditions, excellent catalytic performance, easy separation from the products, low corrosion, environment-friendliness, and reusability. , Previously, our group reported the alkylation reaction of olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons over ionic liquid catalysts, and a variety of base oils such as alkylated naphthalene, alkylated tetralin, alkylated acenaphthene, and alkylated phenanthrene were successfully synthesized by carefully controlling synthetic conditions.…”
