Abstract: The vertical HIV transmission rate has increased over the years and the recommended interventions have not been fully adopted. HIV-infected pregnant women need adequate prophylactic measures in prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum, requiring greater integration among health professionals.

“…A survey conducted at Campo Grande in the Midwest Region of Brazil, between 2007 and 2013, found HIV MTCT rate of 8.7%, and approximately one-third of these mothers did not receive any prenatal care which increased the chance of MTCT by 13.9 times. 21 The percentage of mothers of infected children who received no prenatal care was similar in the present study, and a lack of prenatal care was considered a risk factor for increased MTCT. Other studies have also found an association between increased MTCT and no prenatal care 16,[22][23][24][25] The importance of administering ART during pregnancy has been known for some decades, and currently, with combined therapy, HIV MTCT rates have become significantly lower.…”

“…These same results have also been found in other studies. 19,21,22,24,25,27 Another previously established risk factor was coinfection with syphilis or other sexually transmitted infections during pregnancy, which would facilitate HIV MTCT by various means. 28 Infections with these organisms can lead to cervicitis, which could trigger increased viral dissemination of HIV in the cervicovaginal region, 29,30 as well as placental inflammation, 31,32 increasing the VL of HIV and decreasing the amount of maternal CD4.…”

“…Thus, the vertical transmission rate found is far from that recommended by the Ministry of Health, which is 2% 12 . It is also higher than the rate of 6.3% found in Itajai city 22 , the municipality in Brazil with the highest rate of HIV detection in children aged ≤ 5 years 19 , 23 .…”

“…Brazilian Journal of Health Review, Curitiba, v.4, n.5, p. 21049-21059 sep./oct. 2021 Desde o seu início, a infecção passa por um processo de estabilização, contudo as taxas de infecção têm aumentado na população feminina, o que é chamado de feminização da doença. Este processo é de suma importância, visto que o aumento da infecção entre mulheres em idade fértil pode ocasionar o aumento de crianças expostas ao vírus devido a transmissão vertical (TV) do HIV, que pode ocorrer durante a gestação, parto ou durante a amamentação (MEIRELLES;LOPES;LIMA, 2016).…”
