Rosins and turpentines present in pine resins have been widely used both industrially (coatings, electronics and paint) and pharmaceuticals (ointments). Among the main components of these matrices is abietic acid. This study focuses on the characterization and evaluation of the quality of rosins and turpentines in addition to the quantification of abietic acid in rosins. Rosin and spirit of turpentine were obtained separately through the distillation method from P patula and P. oocarpa resin, species grown in the Department of Cauca-Colombia. Resin-tapping was made using the traditional method (cup and gutter). Quality indicators were determined according to ASTM standards. Solubility tests and identification of functional groups were performed on the obtained rosin by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR). The abietic acid present in the rosins was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). According to their high acid value and low percentage of unsaponifiable matter, the extracted rosins are considered of medium-high quality. Quantification of abietic acid by HPLC showed 14.85 ± 0.24% and 16.09 ± 0.11% for P. patula and P. oocarpa rosin respectively.

In the present work, the reaction of the acetoactanilide derivatives with either benzenediazonium chloride, 4‐chlorobenzenediazonium chloride, or 4‐methoxybenzenediazonium, gave arylhydrazone derivatives. Heterocyclizations of the latter compounds were carried out to afford new thiophene, pyran and pyridine derivatives. The cyctotoxicity of the synthesized compounds against the selected six cancer cell lines was determined where eleven compounds exhibited the highest inhibitions. Through out this work, the produced pyridazine derivatives were selected for evaluation against cancer cell lines categorized according to the disease and the compounds showed high inhibitions. The results obtained in this work encourage further work in the future.

BACKGROUND In recent years, protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO, EC 1.3.3.4) inhibitors have been widely studied as important agricultural herbicides. Our research focused on the design and synthesis of novel PPO inhibitor herbicides, through linking of a diphenylether pyridine bioisostere structure to substituted coumarins, which aims to enhance environmental and crop safety while retaining high efficacy. RESULTS A total of 21 compounds were synthesized via acylation reactions and all compounds were characterized using infrared, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and high‐resolution mass spectra. The respective configurations of compounds IV‐6 and IV‐12 were also confirmed using single crystal X‐ray diffraction. The bioassay results showed that the title compounds displayed notable herbicidal activity, particularly compound IV‐6 which displayed better herbicidal activity in greenhouse and field experiments, crop selectivity and safety for cotton and soybean compared with the commercial herbicide oxyfluorfen. CONCLUSION The work revealed that compound IV‐6 deserves further attention as a candidate structure for a novel and safe herbicide. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.
