High tumoral maspin expression is associated with improved survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Maspin, a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors, is known to have tumor-suppressor functions. However, the association between its expression level and survival has not been demonstrated in human cancer. Using the immunohistochemical technique to examine the expression levels of maspin in 44 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), we found that 66% of the cases expressed low to intermediate levels of maspin and 34% of the cases expressed high levels of maspin. We further examined maspin prote… Show more

“…Recently, Xia et al [33] and Yasumatsu et al [34] demonstrated that maspin is expressed in a subset of oral SCCs with favorable prognosis; in accordance with the findings of Yasumatsu et al [34], in the present study we also observed that maspin is preferentially expressed in well-differentiated SCCs. Moreover, maspin was consistently expressed in almost all squamous pearls.…”

“…Moreover, maspin was consistently expressed in almost all squamous pearls. As previously reported [33,34], maspin expression was not statistically correlated with other pathological features of SCCs, including cell proliferation, growth pattern, and degree of desmoplasia in the stroma. This is the first study to evaluate maspin expression in BCC of the skin.…”

“…The maspin gene was originally identified in normal human breast epithelium as encoding a 42 kDa cytoplasmic protein, and is known to have tumour suppressive activity attributable to the inhibition of breast cancer cell motility, invasion, and metastasis Zou et al, 1994;Seftor et al, 1998). Similarly, the tumour suppressive activity of maspin has been demonstrated for prostate cancer (Umekita et al, 1997), oral carcinoma (Xia et al, 2000), and colon cancer . The prognostic significance of maspin has also been demonstrated in breast cancer (Seftor et al, 1998) and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (Xia et al, 2000).…”

“…HDAC inhibitor should undergo further examination not only as an anti-angiogenesis agent, but also regarding its role in maspin re-expression to explore its potential as a possible biomarker for relapse risk in cancer therapy, as alterations in maspin expression are known to play an important role in oral tumorigenesis. In oral squamous cell carcinoma, high levels of maspin expression are associated with the absence of lymph node metastasis and with 13 better rates of overall survival [33].…”
