High temperature oxidation behavior of an equimolar refractory metal-based alloy 20Nb 20Mo 20Cr 20Ti 20Al with and without Si addition

Abstract: The high temperature oxidation behavior of a refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) 20Nb-20Mo-20Cr-20Ti-20Al at 900°C, 1000°C and 1100°C was investigated. The oxidation kinetics of the alloy was found to be linear at all temperatures. Oxide scales formed are largely inhomogeneous showing regions with thick and porous layers as well areas with quite thin oxide scales due to formation of discontinuous chromium-rich oxide scales. However, the oxidation resistance can be moderately improved by the addition of 1 at.% … Show more

“…The high-temperature oxidation behavior of HEAs is a relatively new and important topic and so far only a few studies on oxidation and corrosion of HEAs have been performed (Huang et al, 2004;Tsai et al, 2011;Senkov et al, 2012;Butler et al, 2015;Gorr et al, 2015Gorr et al, , 2016Holcomb et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2015;Butler and Weaver, 2016;Laplanche et al, 2016;Dabrowa et al, 2017). Here we report a study of the hightemperature oxidation behavior of Ni, FeNi, CoFeNi, CoCrFeNi, and CoCrFeMnNi.…”

“…[212] The addition of Si to AlTiCrNbMo refractory HEA resulted in a slight increase in the oxidation resistance. [54] The oxidation behavior of AlTiCrNbMo HEA showed the formation of porous and non-protective oxides scales, and the oxidation kinetics followed the linear rate law at 900 and 1000…”

“…One is the oxide inclusions formed during the thermal spraying process, and the other is the oxides formed by the oxidation of the metal phase during the wear test. Previous studies reported that the FeCoNiCr-M HEA alloys exhibited excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature due to the sluggish diffusion [49,50]. Furthermore, the oxide film was suggested to have a low rate of thickening and a high resistance to spallation.…”
