High temperature corrosion studies in molten salt-FLiNaK

Abstract: FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF: 46?5-11?5-42 mol.-%) is a promising candidate as high temperature coolant for next generation nuclear reactor coolants. Major technical challenge in implementation is the selection of structural material that can withstand corrosive nature of FLiNaK. Corrosion study of different alloys such as SS-316L, SS-317L, Inconel-625, Incoloy-800H, Hastelloy-B and Ni-201 was performed in FLiNaK salt. The tests were carried out in the temperature range of 650-850uC in graphite crucibles for 60 h under … Show more

“…Lithium fluoride at room temperature and pressure is a simple and well-studied crystal with the rock salt structure [1][2][3]. It has found applications in optics, radiation detection, and nuclear reactors [4][5][6][7]. Herein, we study variations in the near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) [8] of this salt with temperature.…”

“…The tensile test and hardness test were conducted on the heated specimens, and the mechanical properties were compared. The SEM images were taken, and XRD analysis was done for performing the microstructural analysis [15][16][17].…”

“…However, the challenge is extremely high corrosion with molten fluoride salts . From our previous work typical corrosion rates of high‐temperature alloys like Hastelloy‐B, Inconel‐625, and Hastelloy‐X in FLiNaK at 650°C are 3.02, 23.70, and 37.50 mm/year, respectively . Due to this, it is important to get the thermal hydraulics of the heat transfer medium at operating temperature with suitable material of construction.…”

“…As molten salts like FLiNaK and KCl‐MgCl 2 are highly corrosive in nature, high temperature (650°C‐850°C) corrosion studies have been carried out to investigate the materials compatible with various molten salts . FLiNaK being the most corrosive salt, the material of construction is selected accordingly after the corrosion studies.…”
