High‐Temperature Active Oxidation of Chemically Vapor‐Deposited Silicon Carbide in CO─CO2 Atmosphere

Abstract: Active oxidation behavior of CVD-SIC in CO-CO, atmospheres was investigated using a thermogravimetric technique in the temperature range between 1823 and 1923 K. The gas pressure ratio, PcO,/P,,, was controlled between and lo-' at 0.1 MPa. Active oxidation rates (mass loss rates) showed maxima at a certain value of Pc,,,/Pc,, (PcoJPco)*. In a PcoJPco region lower than the (Pco!Pco)*, a carbon layer was formed on the S i c surface. In a Pco,/PcO region higher than the (PcoJPcc,)*, silica particles or a porous s… Show more

“…However, the results of Dawi, Ogura, and Rosner were obtained from experiments performed at very low oxygen pressures and represent a reaction‐limited regime. The experimentally observed dependence of oxidation transitions on bulk transport and flow rate may be indicative of deviation from diffusion‐limited equilibrium conditions, as demonstrated by Narushima …”

“…Mass loss rates in the active oxidation regime have been measured in several experiments, particularly those of Rosner and Allendorf, and Narushima et al . In the active regime, modeling results from Figure can be directly compared to the experimental data from Rosner and Allendorf .…”

“…Despite low oxygen partial pressures of, for example CO in equilibrium with carbon, we have passive oxidation of Sic up to x 1400°C in CO, because CO is a reactive and oxidizing gas species for Sic [52,85,86]! Consequently active corrosion in COX-environments is measured only at very high temperatures [87].…”

“…There are studies in the measurement of the active-topassive transition in H20/H2 (Kim and Readey, 1987) and CO2/CO (Narushima et al, 1993b). It has been shown that these are equivalent to the oxygen cases with H20 and CO2 acting as the primary oxidant, respectively (Opila and Jacobson, 1995).…”
