High-symmetric structure of the gas-phase cluster ions X-.cntdot..cntdot..cntdot.C6F6 (X = Cl, Br, and I)

Abstract: The gas-phase clustering reactions X~(C6F6),h + C6F6 = X~(C6F6)" for X = F, Cl, Br, and I are studied by using the pulsed electron-beam high-pressure mass spectrometer. Contrary to the covalent bond formation in the cluster F"-C6F6, the bonds of X~-C6F6 for X = Cl, Br, and I are largely electrostatic. Ab initio MO calculation reveals that X" in the cluster X~-C6F6, X = Cl, Br, and I, is located along the Q principal axis of C6F6 to form the C6ii symmetry.

“…Less stable structures gain stability through more planar orientations through distortions of the typical tetrahedral (sp 3 ) Meisenheimer-type geometry. These findings correlate nicely with the anion-arene interactions described by Hay and Bryantsev [21] and the experimental results of Hiraoka et al [22].…”

“…Another extended study shows noncovalent interactions in gas-phase clusters of hexafluorobenzene and various halides (C 6 F 6 ···X − ; X = Cl, Br, and I). 109 The authors suggest a C 6 -symmetric anion−π complex with an anion located on top of the electrondeficient arene (D).…”
