High speed X-ray observation of digital controlled submerged arc welding phenomena

Abstract: In this study, welding phenomena during submerged arc welding (SAW) were revealed with X-ray observation. In the experiment, the test coupon was placed between the X-ray source and high-speed camera. The area surrounding the arc was observed from an angle perpendicular to the welding direction vnat a frame rate is 3000 f s -1 . From the observation results, the droplet transfer, weld pool and molten flux (slag), which were previously unknown, were investigated. The droplet transfer mode is the spray transfer. … Show more

“…The study consists of choosing the measurable and easily controllable parameters of the submerged electric arc welding regime, after welding the samples subjected to X-ray control, the images obtained, and the measurements performed will be analysed and interpreted to find a correlation between the various welding defects that will appear and the variable parameters. “…In addition, the droplet transfer was more similar to spray transfer because the diameter of the droplet was smaller than that of the wire, although the positional relationship between the arc and the droplet was similar to that of the globular transfer. Abe et al [17] proposed that under the condition with a welding current of 600 A, an EN ratio of 0.5, and an arc voltage of 33 V, the droplet transfer mode of SAW was the spray transfer. Then, with the EN ratio increased, the droplet diameter increased while the transfer frequency decreased.…”
