High-Speed mm-Wave Data-Link Based on Hollow Plastic Cable and CMOS Transceiver

Abstract: A multi-Giga-bit/s (up to 6 Gbps) and energy-efficient ( 1 pJ/bit/m) data link is formed by using hollow plastic cable and CMOS transceivers for short distance ( 8 m) digital communications. The demonstrated link couples/de-couples 60 GHz carried digital signals with roughly 6 dB loss per coupling into/from a hollow plastic cable made of relatively low-loss ( 1.5 dB/m) Teflon, which is widely used for various home appliances. The CMOS transceivers are designed and implemented in 65 nm Foundry CMOS to support t… Show more

“…Details of the wireless power link can be found in [35] In this work, we focus on the realization of the wireless gigabit data link, where both 60 GHz TX and RX are critical in the realization of a high data rate transmission. The TX and RX are modified from our previous design that is originally targeted at wire-line communication [36]. Fig.…”

“…A corresponding receiver [36] amplifies and demodulates the signal captured by R-ANT. The incoming signal is self-mixed to cancel the carrier, and extract the envelope of the signal by the OOK demodulation.…”

“…However, due to its high rigidity, a hollow metal pipe creating total reflection at the metal boundaries is expensive and inconvenient. In contrast, a dielectric waveguide, although flexible and easy to use 14 , it has not been considered as an alternative for the conductor based interconnects due to 1) poor manufacturability 15 16 and 2) low power efficiency 17 caused by limited bandwidth-to-centre frequency ratio and 3) intrinsic energy loss due to the field leakage and high bending loss caused by refraction occurring at the boundaries of the bended dielectric waveguide.…”

“…In this Letter, an all-electrical, easy to package and planar structure on a flexible mm-wave dielectric waveguide is presented. Dielectric waveguide for board-level and inter-server interconnections has been proposed in [2][3][4]. In [4], a hollow circular plastic waveguide possessing very low transmission loss is presented.…”
