High speed intelligent classifier of tomatoes by colour, size and weight

Abstract: At present most horticultural products are classified and marketed according to quality standards, which provide a common language for growers, packers, buyers and consumers. The standardisation of both product and packaging enables greater speed and efficiency in management and marketing. Of all the vegetables grown in greenhouses, tomatoes are predominant in both surface area and tons produced. This paper will present the development and evaluation of a low investment classification system of tomatoes with t… Show more

“…Therefore, appearance characteristics are important in breeding programs. In general, appearances are evaluated by experts based on visual observation, which is time-consuming and labor intensive (Clement et al, 2012). “…Results suggest that the scientific interest from each country depends on its typical habits, and thus, Asian countries show a higher scientific interest in rice, since this cereal is an essential part of the oriental diet, while countries such as Spain and Italy pay more attention to tomato research, since vegetables are essential elements of the Mediterranean diet, and this is one of the most important horticultural crops [48,49].…”

“…Digital images were processed by an image-analysis program (Inspector 2.2, Matrox Imaging, USA). In the first stage, the original RGB values for the image were transformed into gray-scale to create a monochromatic image as is regularly done in digital image processing (Clement et al, 2012). The red band was used to perform segmentation of the various components (pruning residues, vegetation, and soil) because this approach allows for the best visualization of the residues and separation of the plant coverings and soil.…”
