High seroprevalence of varicella, measles, mumps, rubella and pertussis antibodies in first-grade medical students

Abstract: The rates of varicella, measles, mumps and rubella immunity in first-grade medical students are very high. To identify those students who need vaccination before commencing practical work in healthcare facilities, a meticulous disease and vaccination history should be taken and medical records should be reviewed. Medical students providing no written evidence of adequate vaccination status should be serologically tested and vaccinated if necessary.

“…This is likely to be due to the second dose of the vaccine applied and/or encounter with the wild mumps virus, which has a booster effect on the immunity of the population. Our data correlate with those of other authors, who also determined more children positive for the mumps antibody at an older age (3,5,7,12). Their results were related to the booster effect of circulating wild mumps viruses, given that their investigations used only one dose of vaccine.…”

“…The global prevalence of antibodies was 48% for mumps. Other studies have found higher prevalence rates of mumps antibodies in different European countries (3,6,7). As seen from our results, a significant number of the children (41%) are at risk of contracting mumps.…”

“…It remained at À92z from 2009 to 2012, which is comparable with data from Europe (2,(16)(17)(18) and the UAE (3). Although both measles and rubella vaccinations are routinely administered in Japan, the seroprevalence of rubella-specific IgG was high during 2007-2008; in contrast, the seroprevalence of measles-specific IgG was low during the same period.…”

“…This is comparable with data from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which reported a rate of 54z during 2011-2012 (3), but it was lower than that reported in Australia (73.8z) from 2002 to 2005 (15). The seropositive ratio of measles-specific IgG dramatically increased to À92z from 2009 to 2012, and this was comparable with data from Europe (2,(16)(17)(18). These findings can be explained by the measles epidemic in 2007 and the effect of the measles vaccination catch-up campaign implemented by the Japanese government in 2008.…”
