“…It is worth mentioning that in our study, unlike Sharif and Tappe study, all of our subjects had high-grade of disability that makes these people, regardless of their age, unteachable, and have behaviors that expose them to parasitic infections. Also, in our study, there was no statistically significant association between the prevalence of intestinal parasites and gender which is consistent with the previous studies [ 7 , 9 , 18 – 20 ].…”

“…People with intellectual disabilities are at risk of parasitic infections due to their poor self-care skills and personal hygiene and lack of health education and performing highrisk behaviors [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Underlying diseases in these people such as immune and nutrient deficiencies, weakness, and constipation along with unusual behavior such as geophagia, nail-biting, confronting human waste, and poor hygiene make them more vulnerable to infectious diseases including parasitic infections.…”

“…Behavioral factors, such as nail-biting and sucking fingers, along with inadequate personal hygiene in these people lead to an increasing risk of Toxocara infection in this high-risk group. In our previous study that was performed on 117 mentally retarded patients, 28.2% of them were infected with toxocariasis [ 29 ].…”

“…Due to poor health and soil‐eating habits in individuals with intellectual disabilities, the chance of infection with Toxoplasma as well as other infectious diseases in this group is higher than in other people in the community (Omidian et al . 2021). This group of people usually has a weaker immune system due to nutritional deficiencies and other underlying diseases.…”
