High-sensitivity C-reactive protein affects central haemodynamics and augmentation index in apparently healthy persons

Abstract: This study shows that plasma levels of hsCRP are positively correlated with AIx, central pulse pressure and central systolic blood pressure. Apparently healthy subjects with increased inflammatory markers have increased systemic arterial stiffness, which might reflect early atherosclerotic changes. Our results suggest that hsCRP and non-invasively measured arterial stiffness could serve as additional tools, beside conventional cardiovascular risk factors, for assessment of global arterial risk and preclinical … Show more

“…Chronic coffee consumption is associated with increased inflammatory markers (Zampelas et al, 2004), denoting lowgrade inflammation. Despite the fact that acute inflammation decreases wave reflections (Vlachopoulos et al, 2005b), chronic low-grade inflammation has been linked to enhanced wave reflections in some studies (Kampus et al, 2004;Kullo et al, 2005;Mahmud and Feely, 2005). In our study, however, we found no association between coffee consumption and hsCRP, a finding that clearly deserves further investigation.…”

“…Indeed, IBD patients are carriers of a significant inflammatory background, as shown by altered level of CRP, and the pivotal role of inflammation in the onset of atherosclerosis has been confirmed by previous studies, and has been also correlated with the level of proinflammatory cytokines [36,37]. In addition, it has been also reported that high levels of such cytokines, selectins and adhesion molecules were strongly related to the "markers" of arterial stiffness in patients suffering from cerebrovascular events [37,38]. Taken together, these data suggest that inflammation not only is strictly related to markers of arterial stiffness, but also is responsible of the raised atherogenic risk of these patients and, thus of cardio and cerebrovascular events in long-term exposed subjects.…”

“…Similarly, an independent relation between Table 3 Multiple linear regression b-coefficients and 95% confidence intervals, standardized b-coefficients and explained variance R 2 describing the association between CRP quintiles compared to lowest quintile as reference (independent variable) and PWV (dependent variable) Abbreviations: AIx, augmentation index; CIMT, carotid intima-media thickness; CRP, C-reactive protein; CVD, cardiovascular disease; DM, diabetes mellitus; HDL, high-density cholesterol; hs-CRP, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein; PWV, pulse wave velocity. CRP and AIx has been shown in 158 asymptomatic middle-aged individuals by Kampus and colleagues 11 . In addition, based on a study carried out in apparently healthy UK adults, Yasmin et al 17 noted CRP only to be related to PWV.…”

“…9 PWV and AIx have been found to be elevated in patients with active arteritis. 10 Although some studies in healthy subjects also suggest a relationship between CRP and arterial stiffness measured by PWV or arterial wave reflections measured by AIx 11,12, other studies do not. 13 This study was, therefore, conducted to determine the association of serum hs-CRP levels with carotid-femoral PWV and radial AIx in a population-based sample of men living independently.…”
