High‐risk transmission clusters of leprosy in an endemic area in the Northeastern Brazil: A retrospective spatiotemporal modelling (2001–2019)

Abstract: I N TRODUC T IONLeprosy (or Hansen's disease) is a chronic and systemic infectious disease, with slow clinical evolution that mainly affects peripheral nerves (Schwann cells), skin and mucous membranes [1]. Leprosy is caused by the intracellular bacillus Mycobacterium leprae; the pathogenesis causes neural damage with loss of sensation and even deformations, which can have a significant mental and social impact on the patient [2][3][4][5]. WHO estimates that there are about 3 million people living with disabil… Show more

“…Notwithstanding, the country exhibits serious social inequalities, as people living in extreme poverty, illiteracy, household clusters, and areas with no access to safe-drinking water and sewage system, mainly in slums (IBGE, 2021). Hence, Brazil is endemic for many neglected diseases as Chagas disease ( Góes et al, 2020 ), leprosy ( Souza et al, 2020 ; Damasceno et al, 2021 ), leishmaniasis ( Ribeiro et al, 2021 ), schistosomiasis ( Paz et al, 2020 ; Silva da Paz et al, 2021 ), and TB ( Lima et al, 2019 ).…”

“…For a better understanding of leprosy transmission dynamics, it is necessary to know the epidemiological factors associated with it [21]. Some studies have already demonstrated that sociodemographic features are linked to this process, such as geographic variations, gender and age [22, 23]. Regarding gender, leprosy can affect proportionally both men and women, but men are most patients with the MB form [3, 4].…”

“…Entre 2001 e 2019 Alagoas apresentou uma taxa média de detecção de casos novos de 14,43/100.000 habitantes, obtendo a classificação de estado altamente endêmico e nesse mesmo período a tendência temporal do estado foi crescente (Damasceno et al, 2021). Isso pode justificar as tendências crescentes de aumento do YLD nesse estudo.…”
