High Risk of Hip and Spinal Fractures after Distal Radius Fracture: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using a National Sample Cohort

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to estimate the risk of hip and spinal fracture after distal radius fracture. Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service—National Sample Cohort were collected between 2002 and 2013. A total of 8013 distal radius fracture participants who were 50 years of age or older were selected. The distal radius fracture participants were matched for age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical history in a 1:4 ratio with control participants. In the subgroup anal… Show more

“…Younger patients receive a DRF after an adequate trauma, and elderly patients suffer fractures through low-energy mechanisms. DRFs cause a decline in clinically important functions, which is an important reason for mortality or loss of independence in the elderly population [ 17 , 18 ]. Low-energy fractures are hallmarks of low bone strength, and DRF patients had a 1.51-fold and 1.40-fold higher incidence of hip fracture and spinal fracture, respectively [ 10 , 19 ].…”

“…Osteoporotic fractures on the hip, distal radius, and spine other than the cervical region were included [ 27 ], whereas cervical spinal fractures were not included and were deemed not to be affected by osteoporotic fractures [ 27 ]. Hip fracture was indicated as a fracture of the head and neck of the femur (S720), pertrochanteric fracture (S721), or subtrochanteric fracture of the femur (S722) [ 28 ].…”

“…For example, a distal radius fracture is often a sentinel event and predicts future falls, hip fractures, the risk for future hospitalization, etc. 27 Here we can impact cost and quality through secondary prevention. Putting our best foot forward with our Telehealth services and studying the impacts to justify our use of it beyond our temporary CMS approval period Advocating for direct access Choose the right care for clients, in the right amount, when they need it, to show documented outcomes …”
