High Risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: A Cohort Study of 493 Patients

Abstract: Our results show a high incidence of DVT in NSCLC patients. Advanced stage and, to a lesser extent, male sex, are important predictors of DVT. Trials to evaluate the use of prophylactic anticoagulant treatments in patients with NSCLC should be conducted.

“…LC is the most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide (Jemal et al, 2009). Patients with LC show a high prevalence of VTE as observed by different authors (Blom et al 2004, Tagalakis et al 2007and Chew et al 2007 being one of the most common tumors in series of patients with cancer-related VTE (Seddighzadeh et al 2007, White at al 2005and Paneesha et al 2010. The thrombotic risk in patients with LC is 20-fold higher than in the general population according to findings by Blom et al (2004).…”

“…Mucins are thought to be a trigger of coagulation (14) and cause induction of disseminated thrombosis (2,15). Meanwhile, the clinical risk factors and candidate laboratory biomarkers predictive of cancer-associated VTE have recently been assessed (7,8,16,17). These factors were reported as tumor type, stage of disease, hospitalization, elevation of platelet, leukocyte counts and D-dimer.…”
