High-risk human papillomavirus in Galicia, Spain: prevalence and evaluation of the sample representativeness

Abstract: In Galicia in 2009 there would be 96 400 women aged 16-64 years infected with HR-HPV. It is possible to estimate HR-HPV prevalence in a population starting from a volunteer sample.

“…HPV types were classified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs Working Group assessment of the carcinogenicity of different HPV types [ 24 26 ]: 13 high-risk (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, and 68) and 5 likely high-risk (53, 66, 70, 73 MM9, and 82 MM4). The finding of two or more high-risk genotypes in the same patient was defined as co-infection [ 27 ].…”

“…As evidenced by the respondents in this study, remote research visits may increase the ability and willingness of individuals to participate in research, as well as include groups that are generally less likely to participate in PD trials, such as individuals without a PD specialist or women. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke also recognizes this potential and called for new means to assess and engage research participants, including investigating “telemedicine to capture long-term outcomes in clinical research cohorts,” in its 2014 PD Research Recommendations [ 36 ]. Another key advantage of remote assessments is the ability to conduct such assessments from a single “center,” which obviates the need for multi-center studies.…”

“…All samples were tested for the presence of HPV DNA using the LINEAR ARRAY HPV genotyping test (Roche Molecular Diagnostics) protocol, which is capable of genotyping HPV 6,11,16,18,26,31,33,35,39,40,42,45,51,52,53,54,55,56,58,59,61,62,64,66 (16,18,31,33,35,39,45,51,52,56,58,59, and 68) and 5 as probable high risk (53,66,70, 73 MM9, and 82 MM4). The presence of two or more genotypes (high-risk, likely high-risk HPV or low-risk genotypes) in the same woman was defined as multiple infection (49).…”
