High-resolution velocity-map-imaging photoelectron spectroscopy of theOphotodetachment fine-structure transitions

Abstract: A high-resolution photoelectron velocity-map-imaging study is reported for the photodetachment of the atomic oxygen anion at 532 nm, where five of the six possible spin-orbit fine-structure transitions have been resolved. A resolution of ⌬E / E = 0.38% was achieved. Within the experimental uncertainty, each of the finestructure transitions has the same anisotropy, the averaged ␤ = −0.89͑1͒ consistent with previous, fine-structureunresolved, experimental and theoretical determinations.

“…The circularisation method used in this study was designed by Lawrance and Gascooke 26 and has been used in previous VMI studies. 27,28 The process involves partitioning the image into wedges, each having a fixed angle and centred on the image centre. One wedge is taken as a reference wedge to which all other wedges can be compared.…”

“…Several alternative VMI designs with excellent focusing capability for photoelectrons have been reported in the literature (55)(56)(57). The key changes made in these designs include adding a fourth electrode whose voltage is adjusted to optimize focus (55,57) and increasing the total length of the VMI stack (56).…”

“…The key changes made in these designs include adding a fourth electrode whose voltage is adjusted to optimize focus (55,57) and increasing the total length of the VMI stack (56). Increasing the length of the VMI lens along the electron flight axis can significantly improve its focusing ability, as the volume of the interaction region is smaller relative to the size of the lens.…”

“…The electron kinetic energy scale was calibrated by measuring the photoelectron spectra of H − and O − . [22][23][24] In this experiment, 15 000-30 000 laser shots were needed to produce an image with good signal to noise. Photoelectron images were analyzed using the Basis Set Expansion, BASEX, Abel transformation method to obtain photoelectron spectra and photoelectron angular distributions, PADs.…”
