High-resolution ultrasound of peripheral neurogenic tumors

Abstract: Peripheral nerve tumors are not frequent, but due to their association with a nerve they are somewhat special. They may be encountered incidentally during evaluation of a soft-tissue mass or when a nerve lesion is clinically suspected and the recognition of such a lesion and its differential diagnosis is key for successful therapy and patient prognosis. As sonography is often the first line modality in the work-up of a soft-tissue mass, the sonographer should be aware of the typical features of such lesions in… Show more

“…HRUS assessments are also able to characterize the nature of tissues surrounding nerve structures, such as adjacent blood vessels, 12 as well as characterize the vascularity and consistency of the tumor. 6 There are considerable cost savings when comparing HRUS with other imaging modalities such as MRI.…”

“…In particular, schwannomas characteristically appear as elongated spindle-shaped masses oriented longitudinally and eccentrically in relation to the nerve, displacing normal nerve tissue. 6,14 Conversely, the nerve and tumor tend to be more intermixed and may be indistinguishable in neurofibromas, particularly of the plexiform type.…”

“…11,12 Nerve ultrasonography is finding increasing indications for diagnosis and surgical planning of peripheral neuropathies, and due to its advantages over other imaging techniques it has also been proposed as the first-line imaging modality for selected cases. 16,33 The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate our experience with ultrasound in peripheral nerve imaging, to analyze the indications and clinical utility for different neuropathies, and to describe how nerve ultrasonography can be integrated into the routine evaluation and management of focal peripheral nerve injuries.…”

“…This finding is a conclusion of a study in which out of 88 benign sheath tumors, only 8% were properly diagnosed in the pre-surgical period and without the use of neurosonography or magnetic resonance neurography [28]. for information on other, rare but frequently malignant, processes taking place in soft tissues we encourage you to consult the relevant source [29]. …”
