High-Resolution Ultrasonography of Primary Peripheral Soft Tissue Lymphoma

Abstract: In patients with a soft-tissue mass, routine plain radiography and high-resolution ultrasonography including color Doppler ultrasonography are recommended before further evaluation with ultrasonographically guided biopsy.

“…At US of cases of lymphoma in the salivary gland, one may observe a solitary, hypoechoic, homogeneous or inhomogeneous lesion, which is oval or lobulated or has irregular margins and sometimes contains echogenic septa or stripes (34,110,111). However, these features are not pathognomonic, and lymphoma may not be reliably differentiated from other neoplastic or nonneoplastic salivary gland tumors with US.…”

“…However, these features are not pathognomonic, and lymphoma may not be reliably differentiated from other neoplastic or nonneoplastic salivary gland tumors with US. A pattern of multiple hypoechoic lesions with increased blood flow may also be seen (34,111). Such a pattern requires differentiation from inflammation, Sjö gren syndrome, granulomatous disease (eg, sarcoidosis), and hematogenous metastases (23,25,32,33,42,43).…”

“…In the neck, the soft tissue commonly has a layered or sliced outline, where an irregular or oval nodule linked to a primary lesion can be unequivocally detected. 18,19 The contrast of hypoechoic lesions to relatively hyperechoic thyroid lobes helps determinate thyroid involvement. All of the invasions of the soft tissues (n = 6) and gland (n = 3) were correctly diagnosed in this study.…”

“…Admittedly, a conventional angiogram was obtained as part of surgical planning. Ultrasonography can be used to aid in core needle biopsy in the diagnosis of lymphoma [9]. In addition, with masses or disease of the submandibular gland, ultrasonography represents an easy, first-line investigation for identification of extraglandular spread and determination of cystic degeneration of the gland [10].…”
