High-resolution Thomson parabola for ion analysis

Abstract: A new, versatile Thomson parabola ion energy (TPIE) analyzer has been designed, constructed, and used at the OMEGA-EP facility. Laser-accelerated multi-MeV ions from hemispherical C targets are transmitted through a W pinhole into a multi-kG magnetic field and subsequently through a parallel electric field of up to 25 kV/cm. The ion drift region has a user-selected length of 10, 50, or 80 cm. With the highest fields, 400-MeV C(6+) and C(5+) may be resolved. TPIE is ten-inch manipulator (TIM)-mounted at OMEGA-E… Show more

“…Both neutral and charged mesons are formed, which means that time measuring methods are preferred here instead of electric analyzing fields [19,20]. Further, without the time measurements, the very important particle decay time information would be lost.…”

“…4 Additionally, backlighting of HED plasmas with high-energy charged particles has recently provided new insights into magnetic and electric field generation and evolution in contexts relevant to ICF, basic plasma physics, and laboratory astrophysics. [5][6][7][8][9][10] The solid-state nuclear track detector CR-39 11 has provided the basis for many neutron and charged particle diagnostics 5,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] for HED and ICF experiments at both the OMEGA laser facility 21 and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). 22 CR-39, a transparent plastic, detects charged particles with energy on the order of 1-10 MeV with 100% efficiency.…”

“…The magnetic field inside a yoke can either be mapped empirically using a Hall probe [25,26], or modelled numerically as described in Refs. [27][28][29]. The signal obtained on the detector along a given parabolic ion trace can be converted to a raw ion spectrum using the Eqs.…”
