High-resolution spectroscopy of molecular hydrogen in the extreme ultraviolet region

Abstract: in absorption in the vicinity of 83 nm. Predissociative widths as narrow as 0.3 cm have been measured, and profile analyses based on the theory of Pano are performed on these predissociated states. The importance of overlap integrals in the predissociation of B" is shown, and the absorption cross section o = (7.2 +0. 7) &(10 " cm' for the B"~X(2,0) is determined. Anomalous behavior observed in the D (v = 5) states of 0, is analyzed in terms of an accidental perturbation by the D" (v = 0) states.

“…There is good agreement with previously measured values of Rothschild et al [12] and Dehmer and Chupka [11]. The values extracted from the FT absorption spectrum and those from the Ly-α spectrum agree well, thereby confirming experimental consistency.…”

“…Further classical absorption studies conducted on the predissociated widths of D 2 were made by Dehmer and Chupka [11]. Laser based studies were conducted by Rothschild et al [12], employing a laser with bandwidth 0.005 cm −1 yielding accurate information on the predissociated widths for the D 1 Π + u v = 5 state. The Π − u symmetry components of the D 1 Π u system has been studied by emission in the VUV range by Larzillière et al [13] for excited state vibrations v = 5 − 12.…”

“…Usually in metal vapours an autoionizing state at hW3 is used to both enhance X (3) and provide the necessary anomalous dispersion for phase matching. This leads to a fairly limited tuning range in these systems,":" over the width of the autoionizing state.…”

“…Only the B , v = 0 level, lying below the threshold, is unpredissociated. The B − X (2,0) band was investigated by direct one-photon laser excitation in the extreme ultraviolet [6]. Rovibrational levels in the outer well, referred to asB, have been probed by multi-step laser excitation [7,8] and are much longer lived.…”
