High resolution spectroscopy of iridium in a hollow cathode discharge

Abstract: Abstract. We demonstrate the possibility of performing high resolution laser spectroscopy of iridium atoms produced by sputtering in a hollow cathode discharge. By resolving the hyperfine structure of ultraviolet transitions from the ground state, we measure the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole constants of the 5d76s 6p 6Gll/2 and 5 d 7 6S 6p 6F7/2 excited levels and we obtain accurate values for the isotope shifts. Iridium is also discussed as possibly providing reference spectra in the 243 nm region, c… Show more

“…Both are accessible to the r-process and have nuclear spin I = 3/2. The HFS and IS have been measured by Büttgenbach et al (1978), Bürger et al (1984), and Gianfrani & Tino (1993) for one of the Ir I lines that is useful for abundance work, λ2924.790. This line connects an upper 5d 7 6s( 5 F)6p configuration to the ground 5d 7 6s 2 configuration.…”

“…We took hyperfine A and B constants for the ground level from Büttgenbach et al's (1978) extremely accurate atomic-beam magnetic-resonance measurements. Upper level hyperfine constants were taken from Gianfrani & Tito (1993) for the 3220 Å line and from Murakawa and Suwa (1952) for the 3513 Å and 3800 Å lines. The log gf = -0.52 for the 3220 Å line was taken from Gough et al (1983).…”
