High‐resolution sequence stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian‐Ypresian succession along the eastern scarp face of Kharga Oasis, southern Western Desert, Egypt

Abstract: A thick Maastrichtian-Ypresian succession, dominated by marine siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of the regionally recognized Nile Valley and Garra El-Arbain facies associations, is exposed along the eastern escarpment face of Kharga Oasis, located in the Western Desert of Egypt. The main objectives of the present study are: (i) to establish a detailed biostratigraphic framework; (ii) to interpret the depositional environments; and (iii) to propose a sequence stratigraphic framework in order to constrain th… Show more

“…) and at the Gebel Matulla section in Sinai (Farouk ). This boundary has been previously detected in west Dakhla and Kharga oasis and is compatible with the sequence boundaries SB2 and MaKh2 of El‐Azabi & El‐Araby (); El‐Azabi & Farouk (), respectively. The Early/Late Maastrichtian is characterized in Egypt by sea‐level fall and erosion, and non‐deposition was widespread and extensive in the marginal seas towards south Egypt coupled with local tectonic activity (Hendriks et al ; Keller et al ; Farouk ).…”

“…This sequence boundary is followed upward by major open marine transgression during the early Maastrichtian age (e.g. Hendriks et al ; Haq et al ; Lüning et al, , ; Li et al ; Kuss et al ; Keller et al ; El‐Azabi & Farouk ; Farouk ; Ahmed et al ).…”

“…TST3 (samples 17–18): During the early Maastrichtian, a major transgressive episode is recorded in numerous parts of the African and Arabian plates (El‐Azabi & Farouk, ; Soudry, Glenn, Nathan, Segal, & Vonder, ). It is represented in the present study by inner neritic hemipelagic chalk rich in organic matter of the MCM Formation in Jordan.…”

“…These basins are delimited to the southwest by the CalanscioUweinat-Gilf El Kebir High and to the south by a sequence of uplifts, the Uweinat-Aswan High (e.g. Klitzsch, 1978;El-Azabi and Farouk, 2011;Farouk, 2016). The study area located in the southern part of Dakhla basin.…”
