High resolution photoelectron spectrometry of negative ions: Fine-structure transitions in O? and S? photodetachment

Abstract: The energy spectra of electrons detached from O-and S ions by 488.0nm and 514.5 nm photons have been measured with high electron energy resolution (5 meV) in order to determine the branching ratios for the various 2P3/2.1/2 --" aP2, 1.o fine-structure transitions together with their respective angular distributions. Detailed information on the relative importance of the s-and d-wave continuum is obtained.

“…58,[63][64][65][66][67][68] In these cases, the change in ␤ can be explained through consideration of the dominant long range term in the potential, the centrifugal term. The free electron wave can be represented as a superposition of partial angular momentum waves for which we will use the symbol ᐉЈ ͑=ᐉ Ϯ 1͒ to allow distinction from the parent orbital angular momentum quantum number ᐉ.…”

“…The PE imaging spectrometer is calibrated using the known 19 PE spectrum of S − , using the second harmonic of a nanosecond-pulsed Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet laser ͑ = 532 nm͒. The S − ions are produced in dissociative electron attachment to CS 2 , entrained into the Ar expansion.…”

Other available product detection techniques include detection of ionic fragments, depletion of the parent negative ion population, detection of the neutral photode struction products, and detection of the photoelectrons.…”

“…All ion beam studies to date (8,14,15) have also incorporated mass analysis in the ion transport from the source to the photon interaction region. While beam methods are essential for photoelectron studies, they have also been used extensively in threshold photodetachment measurements (15)(16)(17).…”
