Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability significantly affects hydro-climate, and thus socio-economics, in the East Asian region, where nearly one-third of the global population resides. Over the last two decades, speleothem δ 18 O records from China have been utilized to reconstruct ASM variability and its underlying forcing mechanisms on orbital to seasonal timescales. Here, we use the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis database (SISAL_v1) to present an overview of hydro-climate variability related to the ASM during three periods: the late Pleistocene, the Holocene, and the last two millennia. We highlight the possible global teleconnections and forcing mechanisms of the ASM on different timescales. The longest composite stalagmite δ 18 O record over the past 640 kyr BP from the region demonstrates that ASM variability on orbital timescales is dominated by the 23 kyr precessional cycles, which are in phase with Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI). During the last glacial, millennial changes in the intensity of the ASM appear to be controlled by North Atlantic climate and oceanic feedbacks. During the Holocene, changes in ASM intensity were primarily controlled by NHSI. However, the spatio-temporal distribution of monsoon rain belts may vary with changes in ASM intensity on decadal to millennial timescales.

Present study investigates the dominant modes of interannual variability in precipitation over the Hengduan Mountains (HM) during rainy seasons. The leading two empirical orthogonal function (EOF) modes of HM precipitation explain 28.4 and 13.9% of the total variance, respectively. Positive EOF1 phase features enhanced precipitation anomalies over the southern HM, and a dipole structure with wet anomalies occupying large areas from the YunGui plateau to Tibetan Plateau is observed in positive EOF2 phase. Analysis of moisture budget and omega equation indicate the importance of leading EOF modes related circulation anomalies, which bring the horizontal warm advection to the HM, favouring the anomalous upward motions and precipitation increase there. For EOF1, the HM is controlled by an anomalous quasi‐barotropic cyclone. This cyclone is one part of a zonally oriented barotropic wave‐like pattern highly resembling the Silk Road pattern. Besides, the SST anomalies over the Indo‐Pacific sector are similar to the decaying phase of La Niña, which induces the wet anomalies and further triggers the anomalous lower‐level cyclone as a Rossby wave response. For EOF2, an anomalous cyclone appears over the Northeast Asia from lower to upper levels, and southerly wind anomalies prevail over the HM. The North Atlantic Oscillation and its coupled tripole SST pattern trigger a zonal wave‐like pattern at middle and high latitudes emanating from the Central Europe, across Mongolia to Northeast Asia. Moreover, the SST anomalies over the Indo‐Pacific sector resemble the developing phase of El Niño, which induces the meridional Pacific‐Japan/East Asia‐Pacific teleconnection from tropical NWP to Northeast Asia.

Rainfall in the Asia summer monsoon (ASM) domain has a complex spatial pattern with the temporal variability at different timescales and their long‐term change has not been fully characterized. An updated 320 multiple proxies network is used to reconstruct the May–October precipitation during the past millennium for eight regions in the ASM domain. The spatial consistency of summer monsoon precipitation variability and the possible links to the internal climate oscillations are investigated. The results show that the regional precipitations over the last millennium in the ASM regions are dominated by the interannual cycle of 2–2.5a and 3.5‐5a, the decadal cycle of ~11a and 15–25a and the multidecadal cycle of ~30a and 40–80a. Coherent dry decades in different regions appear in 1100–1250, 1600–1650 and 1960–2000, while the wet decades appear in 970–990, 1330–1350, 1380–1430, 1550–1580, 1700–1780 and 1810–1910. On interannual scale, the relationships between precipitation for each region and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in both developing and decaying stages are unstable over the entire millennium, but they have opposite‐sign correlations most of the time, which implies that the summer precipitation anomaly for a region tends to reverse in the next summer when a strong ENSO event occurs in the winter. For the long‐term change from multidecadal to centennial scales, the longest dry period of the 12th to 13th centuries in eastern Asia coincides with the period with the lowest ENSO variability due to the in phase change of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which could result in the neutral interbasin east–west cell in Tropics and low frequency of ENSO events.
