High resolution metabolomics to discriminate compounds in serum of male lung cancer patients in South Korea

Abstract: BackgroundThe cancer death rate escalated during 20th century. In South Korea, lung cancer is expected to contribute 12,736 deaths in men, the highest amount among all cancers. Several risk factors may increase the chance to acquiring lung cancer, with mostly related to exogenous compounds found in cigarette smoke and synthetic manufacturing materials. As the mortality rate of lung cancer increases, deeper understanding is necessary to explore risk factors that may lead to this malignancy. In this regard, this… Show more

“…For HRM analyses, 50 μL of sample aliquots was treated with acetonitrile (Burdick & Jackson, Muskegon, MI, USA) (1:4, v/v) and centrifuged at 13,000 × g for 10 min at 4°C to separate proteins. 19 , 20 Urine samples were analyzed using Agilent 1290 Infinity ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA) connected to a 6550 iFunnel Q-ToF LC-MS with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source (Agilent Technologies). Samples were analyzed in the ESI-positive ion mode.…”

“…Moreover, smoking cessation leads to increased bilirubin levels and is associated with lower risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases (O’Malley et al, 2014). Retinol was found to be downregulated in patients who were current smokers as compared to non-smoker controls and was also downregulated in cancer patients compared to controls, indicating that lower levels of this metabolite in smokers may have increased their risk of developing lung cancer (Pamungkas et al, 2016). Retinol or Vitamin A has been found to be effective against breast, ovarian and prostate cancers in animal models, likely due to its ability to induce apoptosis (Bushue and Wan, 2010).…”

“…Interesting, BPA is elevated in lung cancer patients, especially past smokers; however, there is evidence that BPA may have come from other sources other than cigarettes (Pamungkas, Park, Lee, Jee, & Park, 2016). BPA at low concentration have high reactivity and selectivity for ER; oxidative enzymes from fungi such as laccases can oxidate BPA, turning this EDC into a much less reactive substance losing any ERα‐dependent activity (Chairin et al, 2013).…”
