High-resolution measurements of isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in stable and radioactive lead isotopes

Abstract: We present new measurements of isotopic shifts and hyperfine structure in the lead resonance line for a total of 15 isotopes. The experimental accuracy is of order 4 MHz. Using independent measurements of the nuclear parameter A for the stable isotopes we have derived A for all measured isotopes.

“…The S 2n values derived from the experimental results between N = 114 and N = 126 including our work for the neutron-deficient Rn isotopes follow this trend nicely. This indicates that the deformation of the radon nuclei with four additional protons compared to Pb, with the magic proton number Z = 82, is comparable to those of the Pb isotopes [36], which confirms the results of previous investigations [37].…”

“…The hfs A values are adopted from Bouazza et al (2000) for all lines. The IS are adopted from Bouazza et al for the λλ3639, 3683, and 4057 lines and Thompson et al (1983) for the λ2833 line. The standard index of air is given in Peck & Reeder (1972).…”

“…free tin atoms, obtained by vacuum evaporation of elementary tin samples, are irradiated with resonant Iaser light to excite them (see Fig. 1 The experimental setup has been described elsewhere, 17 we therefore restriet the description mainly to special features and alterations that were introduced for the tin experiments.…”
