High-resolution mapping of the quantitative trait locus (QTLs) conferring resistance to false smut disease in rice

Abstract: Decoding the genetic mechanisms underlying disease resistance is of great importance for crop improvement. Rice false smut (RFS) is a major fungal disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens that hampers the grain quality and yield of rice worldwide. It causes 2.8-49% global yield loss depending upon disease severity and varieties grown. In India, the severity of yield loss ranged from 2-75%. Keeping the economic importance of this disease, identification of the genes/QTLs governing disease resistance is of prime … Show more

“…Among them, a novel QTL controlling total smut ball/panicle on chromosome 9 qRFSr9.1 showed largest phenotypic variation was identified. Candidate gene NBS-LRR domain-containing proteins spanned in the region of qRFSr9.1was portrayed as key gene for resistance(Neelam et al, 2021) and similar result on candidate gene NBS-LRR domain-containing proteins for false smut was also reported byLong et al (2020) from screening of 315 accessions using 58 SNP markers Han et al (2020). studied false smut using RIL population (MR183-2 x 08R2394) with 179 SSR markers and detected five QTLs on chromosomes 2, 4, 8 and 11.…”

“…Rice false smut (RFS), caused by the filamentous fungus Ustilaginoidea virens , has become one of the most devastating diseases in major rice-growing areas (Sun et al, 2020). RFS causes up to 49% of yield losses, when the environmental conditions are favorable (Neelam et al, 2022). Additionally, multiple types of mycotoxins are produced by U. virens , such as ustiloxins and ustilaginoidins, that are toxic to plants, animals and humans (Li et al, 2019).…”
