High-Resolution FMCW Reflectometry Using a Single-Mode Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser

Abstract: Abstract-High-resolutionfrequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) reflectometry is realized by using a single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) as a frequency-swept light source for the first time. The optical frequency of the VCSEL is swept by the injection current modulation. The experimental spatial resolution of 250 m was achieved, which is the best value when an injection current tuned laser diode is used as a frequency-swept light source.Index Terms-Frequency-modulated continuous-wave … Show more

“…Next, the local oscillator signal separated by coupler 1 travels through a delay fiber, which is then mixed with the echo signal reflected from a target through coupler 2. The mixed signal is coherently detected by detector D M [17]. At last, a digital acquisition card DAQ is used to sample the dechirp signals, and the data is sent to the computer for subsequent signal processing [18,19] The up observation of a triangular FMCW period is taken as an example to derive the influence of time-varying vibration errors on ranging.…”

“…Laser frequency scanning interference measurements involve completing heterodyne calculations of transmitted and local light to measure distances [1][2][3][4][5]. This method is advantageous in that it does not produce range ambiguities, it exhibits strong anti-interference capacities and non-cooperative targets, and it is highly precise.…”

“…In 2011, Liyama et al used a single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser as the light source. It swept the laser frequency by injection current method, and the spatial resolution of 250 μm in the air was achieved for a target at about 4 cm [9]. Furthermore, the method based on photoelectric feedback to eliminate optical frequency nonlinearity is complicated and costly [10].…”
