High-Resolution Field Evaluation of Radar-Based Dilemma Zone Protection System

Abstract: High-speed signalized intersections are associated with vehicle crashes as a result of dilemma zone problems. Dilemma zones are areas in which, at the onset of yellow, some drivers may decide to proceed and some may decide to stop. This disagreement between drivers can lead to rear-end crashes or right-angle crashes. The research objective of this work was to conduct a field comparison of a radar-based dilemma zone protection system with high-resolution data. Researchers compared the frequency of red light run… Show more

“…DZ is a zone where drivers cannot decide whether to stop or to continue when approaching the intersection and facing yellow signal. In practice, various types of Green Extension Systems (GES) were used to protect DZ . The concepts in DZ protection are: DZ range: The DZ range is based on vehicle time to intersection instead of the vehicle location. Drivers' Behavior in DZ: Some drivers in DZ will keep driving while others will stop when they see the yellow light. Gap‐out/Maxout (DZ protection): The green duration has minimum and maximum limits.…”
