High-resolution correlations of strata within a sand-rich clinothem using grain fabric data, offshore New Jersey, USA

Abstract: Trajectories of successive clinoform rollovers are widely applied to predict patterns of spatio-temporal sand distribution. However, the detailed internal architecture of individual clinothems is rarely documented. Understanding the textural complexities of complete topset-foreset-bottomset clinothem sequences is a key factor in understanding how and when sediment is transferred basinward. This study used high-resolution, core-based analyses of 267 samples from three research boreholes from quasi-coeval topset… Show more

“…Shelf process‐regime is a key factor in determining sediment distribution in time and in space along prograding continental margins, such as best illustrated by the development of compound clinoforms. Its fundamental role in determining the timing and locus of sandy sediment deposition is increasingly recognized (Cosgrove, Hodgson, Mountney, & McCaffrey, ; Cosgrove, Hodgson, Poyatos‐More, McCaffrey, & Mountney, ; Dixon, Steel, & Olariu, ; Hodgson et al, ; Jones, Hodgson, & Flint, ), but is, however, not adequately considered in trajectory analysis models.…”

“…As such, the impact of mixed process-regime conditions on downslope sedimentary texture remains relatively understudied (e.g. Cosgrove et al, 2019).…”
