High Re-Operation Rates Using Conserve Metal-On-Metal Total Hip Articulations

Abstract: Introduction:Metal-on-metal hip articulations have been intensely debated after reports of adverse reactions and high failure rates. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the implant of a metal-on.metal total hip articulation (MOM THA) from a single manufacture in a two-center study.Materials and Methods:108 CONSERVE® MOM THA were implanted in 92 patients between November 2005 and December 2010. Patients had at time of retrospective evaluation their journals reviewed for re-operations and adver… Show more

“…The majority of high failure rates have been reported for either hip resurfacings or large-head metal-on-metal THAs leading to increased revision rates, because of pseudotumors in symptomatic patients or distinct elevated blood metal levels. [24][25][26][27] However, concerns have also grown in the long-term development of pseudotumors in small-head metal-on-metal THAs, which used to be at lower risk for pseudotumors in the past. “…This is based on the pre-market approval (PMA) process in 2385 patients with non-inflammatory or inflammatory arthritis receiving the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) System (Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics, Memphis, TN) [ 36 , 37 ]. Later, in 2007 and 2009, the US FDA approved the clinical use of two additional MoM resurfacing implants, such as the Cormet™ Hip Resurfacing System (Corin, Tampa, FL, USA) and the Conserve ® Plus Total Hip Resurfacing System (MicroPort Orthopedics, Boston, MA, USA), respectively, in patients with non-inflammatory degenerative or inflammatory arthritis [ 38 , 39 ]. Since then, the US FDA has cleared a variety of implants for marketing through the 510(k) process [ 40 ].…”
