High rates of short-term dynamics of forest ecosystem services

Abstract: Currently, the main tools for assessing and managing ecosystem services at large scales are maps providing snapshots of their potential supply. However, many ecosystems change over short timescales, thus such maps soon become inaccurate. Here we show high rates of short-term dynamics of three key forest ecosystem services: wood production, bilberry production, and topsoil carbon storage. Almost 85% of the coldspots and 65% of the hotspots for these services had changed into a different state over a ten-year pe… Show more

“…Future work is also required to better conceptualise the full range of services provided by each sector, especially in the context of ecosystems for which service allocation is complex 76 and which often varies across spatial and temporal scales 30 . An understanding of the spatial and temporal changes in different services provided by ecosystems is crucial for sustainable ecosystem management 77,78 . Whilst ISIC provides a globally applicable overview of services linked to socio-economic sectors, no such international classification for ecosystems and the specific services these provide is available to date 30 .…”

“…The southern part of Shaanxi Province is dominated by economic forests and natural forests, and there are many artificial ecological forests in the north, to provide the functions of windbreak and sand fixation, as well as soil and water conservation. As one of the main bodies of carbon sequestration, forests are closely related to the distribution of carbon sinks [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Ecosystems in general, and water sources in particular, are dynamic structures that naturally vary over space and time and over short time scales [38]. This assessment only considered WSS statically and locally and disregarded services at the regional or global scale, such as carbon sequestration or global climate regulation.…”
