“…Studies in South Africa and USA show that among adolescents who virally unsupressed the risk of interruption in treatment is high [15,33]. However, an interesting ndings in our study show that viral load suppression failure was not found to be a signi cant risk factor for interruption in treatment among adolescence in Tanga region.…”

“…The interruption in treatment rate observed in this study population were high and somewhat consistent with other studies carried out in some African countries and even outside the continent. Other estimates of interruption in treatment among HIV-infected adolescents in Sub-Saharan African countries including Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa have been reported ranging from 13.4-42.2% [4,[14][15][16]. However, compared to our study, low propotion of interruption in treatment of 4.3% was reported in Asian regional cohort study incoprporating six countries in Asia, 9.2% among Indian adolescents [17] and 8.4% in Zimbabwe [18].…”

“…However, this study is not similar with the study conducted in Weliso town of Oromia, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Ghana in which adherence level had no statistically significant association [28][29][30]. The reason for the variation might be the difference in the method of data This study is similar with the study conducted in South Africa and Amhara regional hospitals in which CPT users were one of the independent predictors of virological failure or non suppressed viral among patients on follow up of first line ART treatment [31,32]. Cotrimoxazole preventive therapy is used to restore immunity lowered due to pneumocystis pneumonia and other infections in HIV patients.…”

“…The largest proportion of our LTFU (41% of all LTFU) was early in care and before ART initiation, as has been reported in multiple other studies of CALHIV. 37–39 The most striking increase in annual LTFU was seen among our older adolescents (15–19 years), a concerning phenomenon well described at other African sites, 40,41 that again highlights the complex challenges ALHIV face and the urgent need for services that are adolescent-driven, focused, and friendly. For example, interventions from the Zvandiri, 42 CATS, 43 and PopART 44 studies have shown success in improving linkage, engagement and treatment outcomes of ALHIV in the region and offering blueprints for programs to better support and address the needs of ALHIV.…”
