Pore characteristics are one of the most important elements in the study of shale reservoir properties and are a key parameter for the evaluation of the potential of shale oil and gas resources. Low-temperature nitrogen adsorption is a common laboratory method that is used to characterize the pore structure of shale. However, the effect of shale’s particle size on the experimental results of the nitrogen adsorption of deep shale samples is still unclear. In this paper, using deep shale samples of different mesh sizes from the Luzhou Block as an example, we studied the effect of particle size on the pore structure of deep shale, as characterized by nitrogen adsorption experiments. The results showed that the pore volume of deep shale is mainly distributed in the mesoporous range, with a pore size ranging from 2 to 20 nm. The pore volume, as measured by nitrogen adsorption, increases slowly as the particle size decreases and then it increases rapidly. The particle size of shale has no obvious effect on the measurement of the specific surface area. The fractal dimension of deep shale gradually increases as the particle size of the shale samples increases and the smaller the particle size, the higher the correlation coefficient, R2, of the fractal dimension fitting. In this paper, different recommended sizes are given for selecting suitable particle sizes in nitrogen adsorption experiments on deep shale with different structural parameters, which will increase the accuracy of the study of the pore structure of deep shale.

Understanding the changes of the near-wellbore pore pressure associated with the reservoir depletion is greatly significant for the development of ultra-deep natural gas reservoirs. However, there is still a great challenge for the fluid flow and geomechanics in the reservoir depletion. In this study, a fully coupled model was developed to simulate the near-wellbore and reservoir physics caused by pore pressure in ultra-deep natural gas reservoirs. The stress-dependent porosity and permeability models as well as geomechanics deformation induced by pore pressure were considered in this model, and the COMSOL Multiphysics was used to implement and solve the problem. The numerical model was validated by the reservoir depletion from Dabei gas field in China, and the effects of reservoir properties and production parameters on gas production, near-wellbore pore pressure and permeability evolution were discussed. The results show that the gas production rate increases nonlinearly with the increase in porosity, permeability and Young’s modulus. The lower reservoir porosity will result in the greater near-wellbore pore pressure and the larger rock deformation. The permeability changes have little effect on geomechanics deformation while it affects greatly the gas production rate in the reservoir depletion. With the increase in the gas production rate, the near-wellbore pore pressure and permeability decrease rapidly and tend to balance with time. The reservoir rocks with higher deformation capacity will cause the greater near-wellbore pore pressure.

Carbonate gas reservoirs in China are rich in reserves. In the development process, there are many reserves with low permeability, low efficiency and low recovery degree. It is difficult to stabilize gas well production and prolong its life cycle. Under the condition of original water saturation (Sw) of 0%, 20%, 40%, 55% and 65%, respectively, the physical simulation experiment of gas reservoirs depletion development was carried out by using long core multi-point embedded pressure measuring system. The long cores with average gas permeability of 2.300 mD, 0.485 mD and 0.046 mD (assembled from 10 carbonate cores) were used to carry out this experiment. During the experiment, the pressure dynamics at different positions inside the long core and the gas production dynamics at the outlet were recorded in real time to reveal the production performance and reserves utilization law of carbonate gas reservoirs. The results show that the stable production period of tight reservoir in carbonate gas reservoirs is short, and the low production period is relatively long. The stable production time and recovery rate of gas reservoir increase with the increase of reservoir permeability and decrease with the increase of water saturation. The production of tight carbonate gas reservoirs with permeability less than 0.1 mD is greatly affected by pore water, and the reservoir pressure distribution shows a steep pressure drop funnel, and the reserves far from well are rarely used. Therefore, the reserves far from well should be utilized by closing well to restore formation pressure balance, densifying well pattern or transforming reservoir. The variation range of water saturation in the development of carbonate gas reservoirs is influenced by reservoir permeability and water saturation, and closely related to formation pressure gradient in production process. It decreases with the increase of reservoir permeability and increases with the increase of original water saturation. The research results provide a theoretical basis for understanding the relationship between physical properties of carbonate gas reservoirs and production performance, reserves utilization law, and realizing balanced utilization, efficient development and long-term stable production of carbonate gas reservoirs.
