High Proton Selectivity Sulfonated Polyimides Ion Exchange Membranes for Vanadium Flow Batteries

Abstract: High proton selectivity is the ultimate aim for the ion exchange membranes (IEMs). In this study, two kinds of sulfonated polyimides (SPI)—non-fluorinated and fluorine-containing polyimide—with about 40% sulfonation degree were synthesized by one-step high temperature polymerization. High proton selectivity IEMs were prepared and applied in vanadium flow batteries (VFB). The chemical structures, physicochemical properties and single cell performance of these membranes were characterized. The results indicate t… Show more

“…However, a few researchers focus on the specific membrane for ICFBs. Given that the stability of anion exchange membranes is still a serious problem, membranes commonly used in ICFBs are cation exchange membranes learning from VFB [ 17 , 18 , 19 ] or other batteries [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], such as perfluoro sulfonic membranes like the Nafion series [ 25 ] or sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membranes [ 26 , 27 ]. Nafion membranes are used widely in other battery systems due to their high chemical stability and high proton conductivity.…”

“…Other membrane processes include, but are not limited to, forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation (PV), and membrane distillation (MD) [9][10][11]. Common polymers used for membrane preparation include polystyrene (PS) [12], polypropylene (PP) [13], polyethersulfone (PES) [14], polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) [15], polybenzimidazole (PBI) [16], polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [17], polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) [18], polyethylene (PE) [19], polyamide (PA) [20], and polyimide (PI) [21]. Recently, many new types of polymers are emerging which show promising future for membrane synthesis and applications.…”

“…Poly(ethylene oxide), polyacrylamide, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyethyleneimine, polybenzimidazole, etc. have been used as the basic polymers in the preparation of such membranes [12][13][14][15]. Types of interactions between the acidic and basic sites of polymer membranes such as ionic crosslinking and hydrogen bonds promote the control of the swelling of the membrane without a decrease in the flexibility.…”
