High Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Jiangsu Province, China

Abstract: : Given that HIV prevalence among MSM in some other parts of China has been as high as 3%, STDs facilitate the transmission of HIV, and high prevalence of STDs and sexual risk behaviors among MSM exist in Jiangsu Province, the potential for the future spread of HIV is of concern, and it is urgent to provide MSMs with STD healthcare services and HIV/AIDS/STD prevention education and intervention.

“…The global literature, including the limited number of studies in China, suggests that alcohol use and abuse are positively associated with a number of risky sexual behaviors and outcomes such as unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV and syphilis (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(32)(33)(34)(35). However, these studies often examine global instead of temporal (i.e., sex after drinking) associations.…”

“…Sexual risk practices due to alcohol use and/or abuse have been studied extensively in many countries but not in China (5)(6)(7)(8)(9). The limited body of research investigating the association between alcohol use and sexual risk practices in China has mainly focused on specific populations such as drug users, migrants, female sex workers, and men having sex with men (MSM) in metropolitan and coastal areas (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Little is known about alcohol use and its association with sexual risk practices and HIV infection among Chinese ethnic minorities, many of which have been disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic (19).…”

“…It is now estimated that some 7% of HIV infections in China were acquired during unsafe sex between men (Lu et al, 2006), with new studies revealing high rates of unprotected sex between men who have sex with men, signifi- cant proportions of whom also have sex with women (17%-41%) or sell sex (17%) (Jiang al., 2006;Xu et al, 2006;Liu, Wang et al, 2006). In a study in Jiangsu province, for example, almost one half of men who have sex with men said they had had unprotected anal intercourse in the previous three months.…”

“…In a study in Jiangsu province, for example, almost one half of men who have sex with men said they had had unprotected anal intercourse in the previous three months. None was HIV-positive, but the prevalence of other sexually transmitted infections was high (7% had syphilis and 8% had HSV-2) (Jiang et al, 2006). In the midst of this behaviour, HIV can spread quickly once it does establish a presence.…”

“…Men who have sex with men (MSM) constitute a high-risk population as indicated by the rising rates of STIs including HIV among them. 1 Also, MSM are more prone for depression, suicide and drug abuse with less treatment seeking behaviour. STIs in general, tend to have more prevalence among MSM.…”
