“…We agree, as hiatus hernia was present in almost 90% of our patients with IBS, dyspepsia, NERD and EE. Heartburn (r=0.25,p=0.005) and regurgitation of air (r=0.22, p=0.01) were associated with the presence of hiatus hernia, which agree with a report from Iran and the Middle East which states that hiatus hernia is associated with reflux esophagitis (Rezailashkajani et al 2007), a report from Prague in which reflux esophagitis is present in 50% of patients with hiatal hernia (Tenaiova et al 2007), and a report from Italy in which hiatus hernia was associated with frequent reflux symptoms and esophagitis (Zagari et al 2008). As reported (Fass 2007), we found a higher prevalence of hiatus hernia in patients with EE compared with NERD patients.…”

“…Furthermore, we found a sharp correlation between the level of education and reflux (P <0.005) (17, 19, 29). Supportive studies from Iran and Asia showed similar results, while one study suggested the opposite (30).…”

“…[16]Even in some European countries such as Greece,[17]it has been found that there was a changing pattern of UGIE indications and findings in the years 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 with dyspepsia in 24.4%, 33.6%, 54.3% and 51.3% of cases, respectively (P = 0.002), and reflux in 1.8%, 1.3%, 5.1% and 10.8% of cases, respectively (P = 0.005). With these cases having more frequent indications for upper endoscopy and increasing frequency of reflux esophagitis to 16% in 2005, it lends more support to the fact that esophageal disease is increasing in frequency.…”
