High prevalence of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection in renal transplantation

Abstract: HGV infection prevalence is high (44%) in RTR, but clearly independent of HCV status and/or the geographical origin of the recipients. This data indicates a different epidemiology as compared to our HCVs previous experience.

“…Despite the fact that, no obvious evidence exists regarding the role of GBV-C in liver damage, it appears to play a minor role in acute hepatitis, even in immunosuppressed patients ( 3 , 15 ). Nevertheless, its effects on kidney injury and graft survival cannot be ignored ( 27 - 30 ). Of course, more studies are needed to confirm these observations.…”

“…Finally, several reports have been published on GB virus C and TTV in KTRs, peaking in 1997 and 2003, respectively, and then decreasing. Despite the fact that GB virus C and TTV were first found in serum samples of patients with unexplained hepatitis , most papers have dismissed significant roles for these viruses as etiologic agents of diseases in immune‐competent individuals and in KTRs (Supplementary Table).…”
