High Prevalence of Beta-Lactam-Resistant Escherichia coli in South Australian Grey-Headed Flying Fox Pups (Pteropus poliocephalus)

Abstract: The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli in wildlife is concerning—especially resistance to clinically important beta-lactam antibiotics. Wildlife in closer proximity to humans, including in captivity and in rescue/rehabilitation centres, typically have a higher prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli compared to their free-living counterparts. Each year, several thousand Australian fruit bat pups, including the grey-headed flying fox (GHFF; Pteropus poliocephalus), require rescuing and … Show more

“…MDR E. coli has been reported to be found in fruit bats in Africa, Portugal, and Nigeria. MDR E. coli was found to be resistant to beta-lactamase, carbapenem, and fluroquinolone antibiotics ( McDougall et al ., 2022 ). Resistance found in wild animals may be acquired through direct contact with livestock, humans, or the environment ( Kabali et al ., 2021 ).…”

“…Some bat species can be a source of multidrug resistance bacteria which pose a risk human and animal health [24][25][26][27]. Antimicrobial resistance genes of bacterial species have been isolated from bat guano samples of Myotis blythii and M. myotis [23], and antibiotic resistance genes were detected in fecal samples of wild and captive grey-headed flying foxes [28]. Antibiotic resistant genes have also been detected in other volant wildlife species [29].…”
