High Prevalence and Genotypic Diversity of the Human Papillomavirus in Amazonian Women, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a women population living within the state of Amazonas, Brazil, and to determine the viral genotypes found. The study included 361 sexually active women over 18 years of age. We performed the Pap test and the molecular diagnosis for HPV DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The amplicons obtained were sequenced in automatic sequencer for genotyping. The presence of HPV DNA was found in 29.1% (105) of the women. Only 321… Show more

“…Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease (STD) worldwide, and with 137,000 new cases annually in Brazil [Rocha et al, ]. Although, HPV infection is not sufficient to cause squamous intraepithelial lesion development, 90% of women with cervical cancer are positive for HPV infection, and the occurrence of cervical lesions is concentrated in the Amazon region [De Oliveira et al, ; Lorenzi et al, ].…”

“…The majority of HPV infections are clinically unapparent or asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals [33,34]. However, the immunosuppression caused by HIV seems to favor infection by multiple HPV genotypes, which, if oncogenic, might contribute to the progression of intraepithelial lesions to CIN.…”

“…Although no study has provided strong evidence for carcinogenicity of HPV66, and its single detection is rare in cervical cancer, knowledge on the natural history of HPV 66 in cervical lesion development is still incipient and needs to be investigated. In other regions of Brazil, HPV 58, 31, 33 and 56 were the second most prevalent HPV types among women with cervical abnormalities [5,37,[44][45][46][47]. In the Northeast region, HPV 58, 31, 74, 18 and 16 were the second most prevalent HPV types in abnormal cervical samples [14,[30][31][32][33][34][35].…”
