High Prevalence and Diversity of Caliciviruses in a Community Setting Determined by a Metagenomic Approach

Abstract: Human caliciviruses are important etiological agents of acute gastroenteritis in children under 5 years of age. Several studies have characterized their association with childhood diarrhea and their presence in nondiarrheal stool samples.

“…The oropharynx is a hybrid space shared between the respiratory and digestive tracts, where air but also food and saliva pass through. Thus, it would be expected that at least some microorganisms would be shared between both tracts, as has been shown in previous bacteriome studies in adults 16 , 17 .…”

“…The oropharynx is a hybrid space shared between the respiratory and digestive tracts, where air but also food and saliva pass through. Thus, it would be expected that at least some microorganisms would be shared between both tracts, as has been shown in previous bacteriome studies in adults 16,17 .Here, we characterized and compared the eukaryotic viral communities present in the oropharynx and feces of nine asymptomatic children during their first year of life, living in a semi-rural community. The diversity and dynamics of the eukaryotic virome in both niches were analyzed in samples collected monthly from each subject to establish a robust longitudinal profile of the changes that occur during this important phase of the infants' development.…”

“… 35 A high prevalence rate of caliciviruses was detected in asymptomatic children in a study of determining the fecal virome of infants in Mexico. 36 These studies indicate that many enteric infections happen during early childhood without severe clinical symptoms. Diverse enteric viruses were detected in combination with one another in both diarrheal children and healthy children.…”

“…Sapovirus causes acute viral gastroenteritis in children <5 years old and can cause outbreaks in enclosed facilities like orphanages. 190 , 191 , 192 Infection of porcine kidney cells (LLCPK) with sapovirus (Cowden strain) caused notably increased COX-2 mRNA and protein levels in a time-dependent manner. 193 Inhibition of COX enzymes by NSAIDs and siRNAs caused markedly reduced PGE 2 levels and significant interference in sapovirus replication.…”
